What Osteosarcoma Was To Us

Navigating the uncharted waters of Osteosarcoma. A heartfelt exploration of our family's journey, understanding the harsh realities, and honoring Ethan's indomitable spirit.

A diagnosis we never expected

Osteosarcoma was a type of cancer that I never heard of before Ethan. Unfortunately the survival rate is very low and for us that hit us like a mack truck times 100000000! We remained speechless, shocked, crippled and on panic mode. Ethan had 2 5-7 hour surgeries to remove the tumor in his leg  and one surgery in his lung just as long because unfortunately the cancer had spread to his lungs from day one. His outcome was grim from day one, but he fought until the very end. Every time he was cleared from the doctor with being able to go out in public he would go to the beach, we would have family vacations, he would go see his friends and girlfriend. Most of all he would enjoy his siblings that made them the inseparable trio. All wearing hats together when his hair fell out during Christmas.

Ethan not only fought through it he thrived during the up moments when doctor's said he was not immunocompromised. I am so proud of him. His strength surpasses anyone I have ever known. For us we lived for three years wondering if he would make it to next birthday, Christmas, holiday or even hour at one point. He surprised doctors many times and pulled through.

Definition of Osteosarcoma

Ethan is a champion please see the definition of Osteosarcoma below: Osteosarcoma is a kind of cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Osteosarcoma tends to happen most often in teenagers and young adults. But it also can happen in younger children and older adults. Osteosarcoma can start in any bone. It's most often found in the long bones of the legs, and sometimes the arms. Very rarely, it happens in soft tissue outside the bone. For Ethan, it was in his thigh. I lived holding my breath for three years and asked doctors and nurses endless questions. If any of you are reading this and want to ask a question about this, please comment below.
